Nikhat Zareen, Lovlina Borgohain Grab ‘Gold’ For India At Women’s World Boxing Championships Finals

It was a golden night for India at the IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in New Delhi as Nikhat Zareen and Lovlina Borgohin grab gold for the nation. While Nikhat Zareen won the gold in the 50kg category, Lovlina Borgohain won the gold in the 75kg category in the finals at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex.

Taking notes from the match, Nikhat Zareen registered a 5-0 victory in the final bout against Vietnam’s Nguyen Thi Tam to claim India’s third gold in the tournament before Lovlina Borgohain won the summit clash against Australia’s Caitlin Parker with a split 5-2 verdict.

Moreover, Indian pugilists Nitu Ghanghas (48kg) and Saweety Boora (81kg) also won gold in their respective categories on Saturday.

PM Modi takes Twitter to extend his congratulations

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also congratulated the Indian boxers, Nikhat Zareen and Lovlina Borgohain for winning the gold. Taking to Twitter, PM Modi congratulated Zareen and said she is an outstanding champion and she has made India proud on many occasions.

With this victory, Nikhat became only the second Indian female pugilist to win two golds at the World Championships alongside the boxing legend Mary Kom who claimed a record six gold medals in the competition.

“Congratulations to @nikhat_zareen for her spectacular victory at the World Boxing Championships and winning a Gold. She is an outstanding champion whose success has made India proud on many occasions,” PM Modi tweeted.

In another tweet, he congratulated Lovlina and wrote, “Congratulations @LovlinaBorgohai for her stupendous feat at the Boxing World Championships. She showed great skill. India is delighted by her winning the Gold medal.”

All pugilists were rewarded with INR 82.7 lakhs ($100,000) each in prize money for becoming World Champions.
