Mumbai Indians (MI) will be eager to recover from their disappointing start to the IPL 2025 season when they face Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad this Saturday.
Both teams come into this match without a win, having suffered defeats in their opening games, setting the stage for a high-stakes encounter.
One of the most significant boosts for MI ahead of this clash is the return of their captain, Hardik Pandya.
Pandya missed the season opener against Chennai Super Kings due to a suspension for an over-rate offence in IPL 2024.
MI struggled in his absence, posting a subpar total of 155/9 and losing to CSK by four wickets.
With Pandya back, MI will hope for a much-needed improvement, particularly in the batting and bowling departments.
His return strengthens the middle order and provides additional options in the bowling attack, especially during the powerplay and death overs.
MI’s batting lineup was far from its best in the opener at Chepauk, with star players like Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav failing to find form.
With Ahmedabad’s pitch expected to be more batting-friendly, both players will need to step up and anchor the innings.

The presence of Hardik Pandya will be crucial in stabilizing the middle order and providing much-needed firepower.
However, MI will still be without their pace spearhead, Jasprit Bumrah, who continues to recover from a back injury.
His absence leaves a significant gap in the bowling attack, putting more pressure on Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar to lead the pace department.
On the other hand, Gujarat Titans, led by Shubman Gill, will also be aiming to bounce back after their narrow defeat to Punjab Kings in their opening match.
Despite a spirited chase where they fell just 11 runs short of a massive target of 244, Gujarat’s bowling unit struggled.
In this match against MI, the Titans will rely on Kagiso Rabada, Mohammed Siraj, and Rashid Khan to contain MI’s potent batting order.
However, a lack of experienced support in their pace attack may pose a challenge for coach Ashish Nehra.
The Titans will need to carefully consider their overseas combination for this match.
Their Indian pacers, including Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, and Ishant Sharma, all rely on a similar hit-the-deck approach, which makes it essential for Rabada to shine with the new ball.
The decision on their overseas players could play a key role in the outcome of this match.
The Ahmedabad pitch is expected to be a batter-friendly surface, as seen in the high-scoring thriller between Gujarat and Punjab, where 475 runs were scored in just 40 overs.
With short boundaries and true bounce, another run-fest could be in the cards, which will place added responsibility on the bowlers to execute their plans effectively.
