Spinners Gudakesh Motie and Roston Chase shared five wickets as West Indies produced a clinical all-round display to defeat England by 30 runs in Match 15 of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Wednesday.
After recovering from early setbacks to post 196/6, the Caribbean side bowled England out for 166 in 19 overs on a surface that assisted both seam and spin. Motie returned figures of 3-33, while Chase capped a fine outing, after scoring 34, with 2-29.
The win marked West Indies’ first T20 World Cup victory over England in 10 years.
West Indies moved to the top of Group C with four points, while England slipped to third behind Scotland on net run rate.
Chasing 197, England began positively as Phil Salt (30 off 14) and Jos Buttler (21 off 14) added 38 runs.
Though Salt fell to Romario Shepherd, Buttler and Jacob Bethell pushed the score to 67/1 at the end of the Power-play.
Buttler departed soon after, and Motie swung the momentum decisively. He removed Tom Banton (2) and Bethell (33 off 23), reducing England to 90/4 in the 10th over. Harry Brook (17) and Sam Curran stitched a 41-run stand, but Chase and Motie struck at key moments to leave England struggling at 131/5.
Wickets continued to tumble as Will Jacks (92), Jamie Overton (5) and Jofra Archer (6) fell quickly.
With 47 needed off 18 balls, England’s hopes rested on Sam Curran, who remained unbeaten on 43 off 30 balls (3×4, 2×6). However, a lack of support saw them bowled out for 166.
Earlier, Sherfane Rutherford’s unbeaten 76 powered West Indies, supported by Chase (34) and Jason Holder (33).
West Indies 196/6 (Rutherford 76 not out; Rashid 2-16) beat England 166 (Curran 43 not out; Motie 3-33) by 30 runs.
