Mexico Outclass Ecuador To Secure First World Cup Knockout Victory Since 1986

Co-hosts Mexico booked their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 after comfortably overcoming Ecuador 2-0 at the Mexico City Stadium on Wednesday.

Julián Quiñones opened the scoring before Raúl Jiménez added a second, helping El Tri register their first World Cup knockout-stage success since defeating Bulgaria during the 1986 tournament.

Persistent rain delayed the start of the match by an hour, but Mexico wasted little time asserting themselves.

After creating several early chances, the breakthrough arrived in the 22nd minute when Roberto Alvarado released Quiñones with a perfectly weighted pass.

The forward surged into the penalty area and unleashed a powerful strike that beat Hernán Galíndez to give the hosts the lead.

The home side continued to dominate as Quiñones turned creator by supplying Jiménez, who calmly finished to double Mexico’s advantage before half-time.

At the other end, defenders César Montes and Johan Vásquez kept Ecuador’s attackers under control, while goalkeeper Raúl Rangel preserved his fourth consecutive clean sheet of the competition with another composed performance.

Midfielder Gilberto Mora made history by becoming only the second 17-year-old to start a World Cup knockout fixture after Brazilian icon Pelé.

Player of the Match Quiñones praised the team’s collective effort after the final whistle, insisting that success came through unity and determination.

Mexico has also become the first host nation since Italy in 1990 to win its opening four matches at a World Cup. They will now return to the Mexico City Stadium on July 6 to face either England or Congo DR in the Round of 16 as they continue their pursuit of World Cup glory.
