France confirmed their progression to the Round of 32 after overcoming Iraq 3-0 in a one-sided Group I encounter.
France secured a place in the Round of 32 with one group-stage match remaining. The result strengthened its credentials as one of the leading contenders for the World Cup title.
Making his 100th appearance for the French national team, Kylian Mbappé delivered another outstanding performance by scoring twice. His first goal arrived in the 14th minute when he latched onto a pass from Michael Olise before firing an unstoppable strike into the net from long range.
The brace added another chapter to Mbappé’s growing list of achievements. He has now scored two or more goals in six separate World Cup matches, a feat unmatched by any player in the history of the competition. His tournament tally rose to four goals, placing him among the leading contenders for the Golden Boot award.
France extended their lead after Iraq gifted possession away during a poorly executed goal kick.
Dembélé seized the opportunity before finding Mbappé in space, allowing the captain to calmly finish and double his side’s advantage.
The goal also elevated Mbappé in the World Cup record books. Having started the match level with Ronaldo’s tally in sight, he moved beyond the Brazilian icon’s total of 15 goals and drew level with Germany’s Miroslav Klose on 16.
France continued to control proceedings after the break and was rewarded with a third goal.
Olise produced another incisive pass to release Dembélé, who finished confidently to register the first World Cup goal of his international career.
The result leaves France in a strong position ahead of its upcoming meeting with Norway.
Mbappé will now focus on chasing more milestones. He will target Lionel Messi’s World Cup scoring record. He will also aim to win the Golden Boot in the tournament across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
