Justin Greaves scored his first ODI hundred as West Indies posted 295/7 against India in the series opener at Greenfield International Stadium on Sunday.
John Campbell and Amir Jangoo also registered half-centuries, while Kuldeep Yadav’s four-wicket spell slowed the visitors after their brisk start.
West Indies began confidently after India chose to field in hot and humid weather. Greaves and Campbell put on 85 runs in the opening 10 overs, with the latter making 62 from 60 balls, including six fours and three sixes.
Greaves punished the seamers and reached his century from 108 deliveries, hitting 12 boundaries.
He scored 56 runs off India’s fast bowlers, but found scoring harder against spin. The opening partnership reached 135, the West Indies’ third-highest opening stand against India in India.
Campbell brought up his fifty in the 17th over, but Kuldeep ended the stand three overs later when the opener top-edged a sweep to short fine leg.
The spinner followed up by having captain Shai Hope caught at backward point after a mistimed lofted shot.
Greaves raised his maiden ODI hundred with a sharp single, then fell leg-before while attempting a sweep against Kuldeep’s googly.
India’s review confirmed the ball would strike the top of off stump. Kuldeep soon took his fourth wicket, dismissing Jewel Andrew for a golden duck after the youngster edged to Rohit Sharma at slip.
Prasidh Krishna removed Keacy Carty and later bowled Roston Chase for 24, ending a 50-run partnership.
Jangoo’s unbeaten 58 from 43 balls, his second ODI half-century, helped West Indies approach the 300-run mark.
He attacked Prasidh and Gurnoor Brar in the final overs, but the visitors ended their innings five runs short.
