KL Rahul Opens Up On Unfulfilled Potential, Retirement Thoughts And Finding Stability In ODIs

Indian batter KL Rahul has acknowledged that his international career has not entirely lived up to the high expectations surrounding his talent.

The Karnataka cricketer, however, believes he has found fresh motivation and clarity after settling into a defined role in India’s ODI middle order, where he has emerged as one of the most dependable Number 5 batters in world cricket.

Over the past few years, Rahul has delivered consistently in the 50-over format. He is currently the only Number 5 batter globally to average over 60 while maintaining a strike rate close to 100 in ODIs, underlining his value in pressure situations.

At 33, Rahul appears to be peaking in the format, even as his T20I career has been on hold since 2022, and his Test average of 35.86 continues to fall short of his perceived ability.

Thoughts on Retirement

Speaking in an interview with former England captain Kevin Pietersen on YouTube, Rahul shared his thoughts on retirement, adopting a practical and grounded outlook.

He stated that walking away from the game would not be difficult if he felt the time was right, stressing that there is little value in prolonging a career unnecessarily. Rahul added that while retirement is not an immediate concern, he believes honesty with oneself is key when making such decisions.

The Indian batter also opened up about the psychological challenges of dealing with frequent injuries. Rahul admitted that repeated setbacks have taken a greater toll mentally than physically, explaining that the constant cycle of recovery can sometimes lead to exhaustion and self-doubt.

Rahul noted that life beyond cricket has become increasingly important to him, especially after becoming a father.

He emphasised that the sport will continue with or without any individual and that personal well-being and family hold greater significance in the long run.

Following India’s recent ODI assignments, Rahul will return to domestic cricket and is expected to represent Karnataka in a crucial Ranji Trophy match against Punjab in Mohali, as he briefly shifts his focus back to the domestic circuit.
