Jeremy Lalrinnunga Wins Silver At Asian Championships But Unable To Finish Competition

Jeremy Lalrinnunga, an Indian weightlifter, had a bad performance at the Asian Championships on Sunday in Jinju, Korea. He won silver in the snatch but was unable to add a total since he was unable to lift the weight in any of his three clean-and-jerk efforts.

Jeremy was the only one in the 12-lifter field who did not finish (DNF) his event in his first tournament since the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

The 20-year-old, on the other hand, took silver in the snatch with a personal best-equaling lift of 141 kg in the non-Olympic 67 kg weight class.

In his first two clean-and-jerk attempts, Jeremy failed to lift 165 kg. He subsequently lifted the weight to 168 kg, which was 2 kg more than his personal best, but the defending Youth Olympic champion stumbled again.

In actuality, Jeremy could only lift the barbell twice out of six attempts (three each in snatch and clean and jerk).

The Mizo lifter, who missed last year’s World Championship due to a thigh ailment, appeared rusty from the start.

His championship got off to a shaky start when his right knee gave up during his first snatch attempt of 137 kg. On his second attempt, he was able to lift the same weight comfortably.

Jeremy then broke the snatch record with a successful 141 kg attempt to record the section’s second-highest lift before things went south for him.

The disappointment on the Indian’s face could be seen during the medal ceremony when the lifter stood on the podium.

China’s He Yueji 320 kg (147 kg 173 kg) won gold, while local favorite Lee Sangyeon 314 kg (139 kg 175 kg) and Uzbek lifter Ergashev Adkhamjon 312 kg (138 kg 174 kg) earned silver and bronze.

Bindyarani Devi won silver in the women’s 55kg event on Saturday, giving India its first medal.
