IPL’s New Rule: Playing XI To Be Revealed After Toss

The 16th edition of the Tata IPL is set to begin on March 31st of this month. As the IND vs. AUS one-day series has come to an end, players from all over the world are now ready for the biggest T20 league in the world. The first match is to be played between Hardik Panday’s Gujarat Giants and MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings. Now as the IPL 2023 is set to begin, the higher authorities have introduced a new rule, “The Impact Player Rule.”

The Impact Player Rule 2023

Now interestingly the IPL authorities have introduced a new rule before the 16th edition of the league. The name of this rule is said to be “Impact Player Rule”. Teams will have the opportunity to select an “impact player” for the very first time this season. This will be a replacement player who can bat and bowl at the same time. The idea is to follow in the footsteps of sports like basketball, football, and so on, in which substitutes are used as needed.

Before implementing the “Impact Player” rule during the 2023 IPL season, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) tried it out in its domestic tournaments. The Decision Review System (DRS) will also allow teams to challenge wide and no-ball decisions made by umpires, just like it does in the Women’s Premier League (WPL).

After the SA20, the IPL is the second franchise T20 league to allow teams to announce their XIs after the toss. In the SA20, which organized its debut season recently, groups put 13 names in the group sheets at first before declaring their last XIs after the throw. The SA20 tournament director, Graeme Smith, stated at the time that the move was intended to “lessen the impact of the toss” and enable a level playing field based on the circumstances. The numbers toward the end of the SA20 season were even: In the 33 games, the team that won the toss prevailed 15 times and lost 16 (two with no results).

Should the player always be an Indian player?

The impact player’s dependence will always depend on the starting lineup of the team. For example, if Gujarat has four foreign players in their team, they can only allow an Indian player to be the impact player in the match. However, this will only depend on the team’s starting XI in the match.
