India etched their name into the record books with a resounding 270-run victory over England in the inaugural Women’s Test at Lord’s on Monday.
Off-spinner Sneh Rana produced a match-winning spell of 4-42 as Harmanpreet Kaur’s side bowled out the hosts for 186 while defending a target of 457.
The emphatic triumph marked India’s seventh victory in their last 11 Women’s Tests and preserved their unbeaten record in the longest format on English soil.
England began the fourth day on 130/6, relying on Amy Jones to keep their hopes alive after her overnight fifty.
India, however, wasted little time as Rana dismissed Jones for 54 to leave the hosts on the brink of defeat.
Issy Wong and Sophie Ecclestone briefly frustrated the visitors with a stubborn stand before Deepti Sharma clean bowled Wong.
Deepti later removed Lauren Bell, while Rana wrapped up the innings by dismissing Ecclestone shortly after the England all-rounder reached her maiden Test half-century.
England eventually succumbed for 186 in 62.5 overs.
India built the platform for victory through valuable contributions from several batters.
Smriti Mandhana impressed with scores of 83 and 70 across the two innings, while Yastika Bhatia struck a superb 113 to become the first woman to score a Test century at Lord’s.
Richa Ghosh also made a crucial unbeaten fifty as India declared on 341/7.
Kranti Gaud added to England’s troubles with a fine bowling performance earlier in the match.
India celebrated the historic win in the presence of batting legend Sachin Tendulkar, who addressed the team before the start of play.
ICC Chairman Jay Shah, BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla and Secretary Devajit Saikia also witnessed the landmark achievement.
The victory ensured that the first Women’s Test ever played at Lord’s became a memorable occasion, with India producing a dominant performance in every department to secure one of the finest wins in their Test history.
