India Crush Zimbabwe To Keep T20 World Cup Semi-Final Dream Alive

Defending champions India kept their T20 World Cup campaign alive with a comprehensive 72-run victory over Zimbabwe in Chennai.

After suffering a heavy defeat to South Africa in their Super 8 opener, India responded emphatically with the bat.

Having dominated the group stage unbeaten, Zimbabwe struggled in the Super 8s, conceding more than 250 runs for the second successive match as India amassed 256-4.

The total stands as the second-highest in T20 World Cup history, behind Sri Lanka’s 260-6 in 2007.

Opener Abhishek Sharma led the charge with a brisk 55 from 30 deliveries, striking four fours and four sixes. Hardik Pandya provided a stunning late flourish, reaching his half-century from just 23 balls with a six off the final delivery of the innings.

Tilak Varma added an unbeaten 44 from 16 balls as India plundered 84 runs in the final 5.1 overs.

India had earlier set the tone during the powerplay, racing to 80-1. Sharma’s 72-run partnership with Ishan Kishan stabilised the innings, while captain Suryakumar Yadav punished Zimbabwe’s fielding lapses with a rapid 33 from 13 balls.

Chasing a daunting 257, Zimbabwe relied heavily on opener Brian Bennett, who produced a magnificent unbeaten 97 from 59 balls.

The 22-year-old reached his half-century in 34 deliveries and struck eight fours and six sixes. However, he received little support, with Sikandar Raza’s 31 the next highest contribution.

Zimbabwe’s bowlers endured a punishing outing, particularly the pace attack, which conceded 197 runs from 14 overs.

India now sits level on two points with West Indies and knows that victory over the two-time champions in Kolkata on Sunday will guarantee a place in the last four. Meanwhile, South Africa and England have already secured their semi-final berths with a match to spare.
