India Begins Test Season Against Afghanistan In One-Off Match At New Chandigarh

India will resume their red-ball campaign when they face Afghanistan in a one-off Test at the New PCA Stadium in New Chandigarh on Saturday.

Despite being outside the World Test Championship calendar, the Indian team has made it clear that it views the contest with the same importance as any other Test match.

The fixture will be India’s first Test outing since the South Africa series last November.

Several squad members have had limited time to readjust after a demanding IPL season, making the transition back to Test cricket a notable challenge.

Key Players Under the Spotlight

Shubman Gill will continue to lead a side changing, with senior all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja unavailable after receiving a rest period.

India will also enter a home Test without either Jadeja or the retired Ravichandran Ashwin for the first time in more than a decade.

Head coach Gautam Gambhir underlined the significance of the encounter, stating that the team remains focused on securing victory regardless of the match’s status outside the World Test Championship structure.

The team management has retained its faith in Sai Sudharsan by persisting with him at the crucial No 3 position.

The match will also represent a major personal achievement for Rishabh Pant, who is preparing to make his 50th appearance in Test cricket for India.

Afghanistan arrive in New Chandigarh eager to demonstrate how much their Test side has developed since their first encounter with India in 2018.

Captain Hashmatullah Shahidi will lead a group that includes Rahmat Shah, who stands on the verge of becoming the first Afghan batter to score 1,000 Test runs.

Although the visitors will be without star spinner Rashid Khan, they remain optimistic under the guidance of newly appointed head coach Richard Pybus.

Rising temperatures and a surface expected to evolve over five days could significantly influence the contest, with spin bowling likely to become increasingly important as the match progresses.
