India produced a clinical all-round display to defeat Bangladesh by five wickets in their Women’s T20 World Cup clash at Old Trafford, Manchester.
Pursuing 137 for victory, the Indian openers attacked from the first over and quickly seized control of the contest.
Shafali Verma dominated the innings with a sparkling 53 from only 34 deliveries, striking eight fours and a six. Her aggressive batting helped India register 63/1 in the Powerplay, the team’s highest-ever Powerplay score in the history of the Women’s T20 World Cup.
Although Bangladesh claimed a few wickets in the middle overs, India never allowed the required run rate to rise.
Yastika Bhatia played a composed knock of 23, while Jemimah Rodrigues accelerated the chase with an entertaining 26 off 15 balls.
Captain Harmanpreet Kaur and Deepti Sharma remained calm under pressure and guided India to 139/5 in 16.5 overs, sealing victory with 19 deliveries to spare.
Earlier, Bangladesh managed 136/8 from their allotted 20 overs after India invited them to bat.
Juairiya Ferdous scored 33 at the top of the order, while skipper Nigar Sultana added 32 to keep the innings on track before regular breakthroughs halted their progress.
Radha Yadav led India’s bowling attack with impressive figures of 3/28.
Shree Charani chipped in with 2/24, taking her tournament tally to 12 wickets and becoming the first Indian woman to achieve that milestone in a single Women’s T20 World Cup.
The comprehensive victory underlined India’s balance across all departments.
An explosive start from Shafali, valuable middle-order partnerships and disciplined bowling combined to secure another important win and reinforce India’s ambitions of making a deep run in the tournament.
