Joint efforts by the bowlers and Hardik Pandya’s brilliance with bat and ball handed India a 101-run victory in the first T20I against South Africa at the Barabati Stadium, Cuttack.
The win leads Team India to a crucial 1-0 lead in the five-game series ahead of the upcoming 2026 T20 World Cup.
Aiden Markram, South Africa Captain, won the toss and invited India to bat first.
South African Pacer Lungi Ngidi dismissed Shubman Gill early, who was making a comeback after an injury in the first test match against South Africa. The Pacer also dismissed Indian skipper Suryakumar Yadav in his next over, leaving India in trouble.
Indian captain Suryakumar tried to counterattack and unsettle the bowler with a six and a four, before falling to a mistimed stroke against Lungi Ngidi.
At the end of the power play, India managed to score 40/2. The two left-handers, Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Varma, slowed down the innings, but Abhishek’s dismissal to Lutho Sipamla broke the momentum.
The middle overs lacked momentum, with Varma and Axar Patel finding it hard to score freely against the South African bowler, before Varma was dismissed for a 26-off-32 effort.
Hardik Pandya’s fighting and attacking knock, which included six boundaries and four sixes and the support offered by Axar shifted the momentum towards India.
Brief cameos from Shivam Dube and Jitesh Sharma provided crucial late runs at the finish.
Amid a surface that turned even routine shots into laboured tasks, Hardik Pandya crafted an innings of rare class. Because the ball gripped and refused to come on, India’s top order struggled for fluency, with Tilak Varma and Axar Patel offering promise without lasting impact.
Yet Pandya seemed untouched by the difficulties, shifting gears with assurance and pulling India back into the contest. Consequently, his innings kept India well in contention despite the testing pitch and the pressure applied by the South African attack.
Defence of 176 began perfectly for the Men in Blue as Arshdeep Singh removed Quinton de Kock for a duck on only the second ball of the chase. Soon after, Tristan Stubbs attempted to accelerate from the outset, but Arshdeep curtailed his stay, claiming a second wicket in the third over.
Next, Aiden Markram and Dewald Brevis rebuilt with purpose, refusing to let early setbacks dictate the innings, but Axar Patel’s introduction during the powerplay ended the skipper’s run-a-ball 14.
Returning to the T20I side after a lengthy break, Hardik Pandya struck with his first delivery, removing the dangerous David Miller to hand India another crucial breakthrough.
Though Marco Jansen briefly revived hopes with a pair of sixes, Varun Chakaravarthy trapped him soon after, deepening the visitors’ troubles.
Bumrah, one wicket short of the 100-T20I milestone, reached the landmark by dismissing Dewald Brevis in the 11th over and celebrated again moments later by removing Keshav Maharaj.
Finally, Shivam Dube sealed the innings as Abhishek Sharma’s sharp catch sent Lutho Sipamla back, leaving South Africa dismissed for their lowest-ever T20I total—just 74.
With India leading the series 1–0, both teams will meet again on Thursday at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh.
