Glenn Maxwell Retires From International Cricket After 14-Year Career

Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has announced his retirement from international cricket after a career spanning 14 years.

The 38-year-old represented Australia in 149 ODIs, 130 T20Is and seven Tests. He won the 2015 and 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cups and the 2021 T20 World Cup.

Maxwell, who retired from ODI cricket in June last year, said on the Final Word podcast that it was time to focus on his physical fitness and remaining tournaments.

“We probably had numerous discussions before and after the T20 World Cup,” Maxwell said. He added that Australia’s management had left the decision open as younger players received opportunities.

“It’s probably a time where I need to spend a little bit more time investing in the body to make sure I can get through the remaining couple of tournaments I’ve got in my career,” he said.

Maxwell last represented Australia during the 2026 T20 World Cup against Oman. He finished as Australia’s third-highest T20I run-scorer, with 2,897 runs, behind David Warner and Aaron Finch.

He also became one of only two players, alongside India’s Rohit Sharma, to score five T20I centuries.

Maxwell scored 3,990 ODI runs at a strike rate of 126.7 and claimed 136 international wickets.

His most memorable performance came against Afghanistan during the 2023 World Cup, when he scored an unbeaten 201 off 128 balls despite suffering cramps.

Maxwell will continue playing for the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League, with his contract running until the 2027-28 season.

However, he has also retired from List A cricket after his final appearance for Victoria.

“Knowing that they’ve played such a huge role in my whole career… I certainly got a little bit choked up speaking in front of the group,” he said.
