Scenes of celebration quickly turned tense at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan, popularly known as Salt Lake Stadium, after Lionel Messi’s much-anticipated appearance ended abruptly.
The Argentine football icon, visiting India as part of his GOAT Tour, was forced to leave within minutes due to an uncontrollable surge in the crowd, sparking anger among spectators.
Security personnel swiftly escorted Messi away as bottles were reportedly thrown towards the pitch. This brought his lap of honour to an early end and left fans stunned.
Many supporters, including those who had purchased high-priced tickets, complained that they never got a clear glimpse of the football legend. Several attendees claimed they waited for hours, only to miss seeing Messi either in person or on the stadium’s large screens.
Restricted visibility caused by heavy security arrangements and the presence of politicians and dignitaries further intensified frustration. Fans said the tight cordon around the pitch prevented most spectators from enjoying the moment they had eagerly awaited.
Anger soon spilt over into vandalism, with some spectators damaging banners and stadium seats. Others were seen throwing chairs and booing officials.
The disorder exposed serious shortcomings in crowd control measures at one of India’s largest sporting venues.
Outside the stadium, disappointed fans told the media that Messi remained on the ground for only a few minutes. They described the experience as deeply unsatisfactory.
Earlier in the day, Messi’s visit had unfolded in a far more positive atmosphere. The football superstar virtually unveiled a towering 70-foot iron statue at the Sree Bhumi Sporting Club in Lake Town.
The statue, depicting Messi holding the FIFA World Cup trophy, was completed in just 40 days and drew widespread admiration from fans across Kolkata.
Supporters gathered in large numbers to celebrate the tribute. They applauded the craftsmanship and the city’s gesture to honour one of football’s greatest players.
However, the turmoil at Salt Lake Stadium has overshadowed what was meant to be a landmark moment for Indian football enthusiasts. The chaotic scenes stood in stark contrast to the excitement and goodwill surrounding Messi’s arrival in the country.
Concerns have now been raised over planning, security preparedness and crowd management as the remainder of Messi’s India tour continues.
For many fans, the brief and troubled appearance has left behind frustration. It did not provide the cherished memories of seeing a global football icon in person.
