Tilak Varma, a young player for the Mumbai Indians, was one of the team’s major additions when India’s roster for the forthcoming T20I series against the West Indies was revealed by the Board for Cricket Control in India (BCCI). In spite of a season that was hindered by injuries, the left-hander was a revelation in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023. The exclusion of Rinku Singh, whose aggressive style of batting made him the star for the Kolkata Knight Riders, aroused concerns, though, as even West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell referred to him as one of the greatest finishers in the competition.
Aakash Chopra, a former opener for the Indian cricket team, commented on the team lineup and stated that it will be challenging for Tilak Verma to bat in his preferred No. 3 position due to the presence of bigger and more seasoned stars. Rinku would have been a better choice, according to Chopra, if India had been seeking to include a hitter who could bat at No. 6 and maybe end the game.
“Suryakumar Yadav, Sanju Samson, Tilak Varma, and Hardik Pandya are in the middle order. I don’t believe the group is considering using Tilak Varma at No. 3. Samson and Ishan Kishan, the two wicketkeepers they chose, are far more suitable to play in the No. 3 position. In the IPL, Tilak Verma performed better at the top of the order. Rinku Singh could have been a better option if they had been looking for someone to bat after Hardik Pandya if Tilak Varma wasn’t going to bat at No. 3,” Chopra remarked in the video.
Beginning on July 12, both teams will play two Test matches as part of the West Indies tour. Three ODIs and five T20 Internationals will follow.
