India’s premier fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has marked a triumphant return to international cricket after almost a year-long hiatus due to fitness issues, just in time for two major upcoming international tournaments.
Bumrah’s return was marred by fitness concerns and back issues, leading to a surgery that sidelined him from crucial events, including the 2022 T20 World Cup, Border Gavaskar Trophy, IPL 2023, and the ICC World Test Championship final.
After extensive rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, Bumrah made a strong comeback, showcasing his prowess by claiming two wickets against Ireland in the first T20I match.
India leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi lauded Bumrah’s comeback, highlighting his impact on the team.
“The type of bowler he is, the whole world has seen his bowling. Everyone was waiting for this Bumrah and it was so good to see him back in his rhythm,” said Bishnoi.
Despite rain curbing the match prematurely with India at 47/2 in 6.5 overs while chasing 140, the tourists secured a victory by 2 runs (DLS method).
Bishnoi remarked on India’s overall performance, acknowledging the team’s strong display in both bowling and opening partnership.
Bishnoi emphasized the importance of the toss, recognizing its role in the match outcome, “Toss always plays a crucial factor in such conditions. Today we were lucky.”
Responding to Ireland batters adopting a defensive approach against his legspin bowling, Bishnoi affirmed his aggressive mindset: “I was bowling aggressively and was trying to pick more wickets.”
Reflecting on his stint in the West Indies T20Is, Bishnoi acknowledged the learning curve, “There is a lot to learn… I want to be ready.”
Bishnoi emphasized the flexibility in his approach, indicating that his strategy adapts to the game situation and the captain’s guidance.
“It depends upon the team situation… a lot depends upon what the captain is saying, what the game situation is,” Bishnoi added.
Bumrah’s successful return infuses vigor into India’s bowling lineup, setting a positive tone for the upcoming tournaments and showcasing the resilience of the Indian cricket team.
