Croatia Beat Ghana 2-1 To Reach FIFA World Cup 2026 Round Of 32

Croatia earned a valuable 2-1 triumph over Ghana at Philadelphia Stadium to move into second place in Group L and confirm their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 32.

Although the defeat dropped Ghana to third, the Black Stars also advanced after ranking among the competition’s best third-placed sides.

Determined to claim all three points, Croatia controlled much of the opening half.

Nikola Vlasic threatened early with a powerful strike that clipped the outside of the post before Petar Sucic opened the scoring in the 31st minute with an unstoppable long-range effort that beat the goalkeeper.

The goal also placed Sucic in Croatia’s record books, making the 22-year-old the country’s second-youngest scorer at a FIFA World Cup, behind Josko Gvardiol.

After producing little attacking threat before the break, Ghana returned with greater purpose in the second half. Their persistence paid off in the 73rd minute when Derrick Luckassen reacted quickest inside the penalty area to guide the ball into the net from a free-kick delivery.

Croatia regained the lead ten minutes later through Nikola Vlasic, who found space inside the box and headed Luka Modric’s corner beyond the goalkeeper after poor defensive marking.

Modric also celebrated another personal milestone by making his 201st appearance for Croatia.

The experienced midfielder has now featured in each of the nation’s last 21 FIFA World Cup matches, a remarkable streak stretching back to the 2006 edition.

Croatia will now travel to Toronto for their Round of 32 clash against the runners-up of Group K on 3 July (IST), while Ghana continues their World Cup journey after securing qualification as one of the strongest third-placed finishers.
