Virat Kohli helps in taking a wicket
Virat Kohli, known for his dynamic energy on the cricket field, isn’t just a batting maestro but also showcases exceptional fielding skills. While he’s renowned for sharp catches, crucial saves, and impactful run-outs, Kohli recently demonstrated another facet of his cricketing acumen – assisting a bowler to secure a crucial wicket.
During the first day of the second Test against South Africa, pacer Mohammed Siraj had a standout performance, achieving his best Test bowling figures of 6 for 15. One memorable wicket owed its success to Kohli, who, positioned at the first slip, guided Siraj in strategizing against South African all-rounder Marco Jansen. Kohli’s advice led to a well-executed delivery by Siraj, resulting in Jansen nicking the ball to wicketkeeper KL Rahul.
Watch here:
Siraj’s spell was a revelation as he dismantled the South African batting lineup, bundling them out for a mere 55 runs before lunch. This marked South Africa’s lowest total against India since their readmission to international cricket in 1991. Siraj’s extraordinary effort in claiming six wickets in a straight nine-over spell showcased his mastery of pace, swing, and seam movement, leaving the Proteas unable to counter the challenging conditions.
The comprehensive performance by Siraj drew parallels with history, as the last Indian bowler to take five wickets before lunch in a Test match was left-arm spinner Maninder Singh, achieving the feat against Pakistan in Bengaluru back in 1986-1987.

On a humid Wednesday morning, Siraj’s masterclass highlighted the unpredictable nature of cricket, illustrating how a skillful bowler can be a great equalizer. The Proteas’ innings concluded in just 23.2 overs, further cementing India’s dominance in the second Test in Cape Town.
