Controversy Surrounds Boundary Tampering Allegations During Pakistan vs. Sri Lanka World Cup Match

The Cricket World Cup 2023 featured an exhilarating high-scoring match between the Pakistan cricket team led by Babar Azam and the Sri Lanka cricket team captained by Dasun Shanaka. Sri Lanka, powered by centuries from Kusal Mendis and Sadeera Samarawickrama, set a formidable target of 345 runs for Pakistan. Despite Babar Azam’s underwhelming performance, Pakistan made a remarkable comeback with Abdullah Shafique and Mohammad Rizwan leading the charge. Rizwan played a pivotal role, remaining unbeaten on 131 as his team successfully chased down the target in 48.2 overs.

During the course of the match, several social media users raised an interesting point about the “Field of play” concerning a catch taken by Imam-ul-Haq off Hassan Ali’s delivery to dismiss Kusal Mendis. They suggested that the boundary might have been pushed closer, making it easier for Imam to take the catch near the ropes. Some social media accounts pointed out a patch of discolored grass, presumably due to the boundary rope. However, no official statement from the ICC regarding this matter was reported.

In the match itself, opener Abdullah Shafique and wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Rizwan showcased their brilliance by scoring centuries, leading Pakistan to a thrilling six-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in a high-scoring World Cup clash in Hyderabad. Shafique, playing only his fifth One Day International (ODI), compiled a remarkable 103-ball 113, while Rizwan battled through cramps to score an unbeaten 131. They forged a crucial 95-run partnership with Saud Shakeel (31), which played a significant role in Pakistan’s successful pursuit of Sri Lanka’s total of 344/9 in 48.2 overs.

With this second win in the tournament, Pakistan climbed one spot to second place on the points table, trailing behind the tournament leaders, New Zealand.

In the earlier part of the game, Kusal Mendis scored a sensational 122, while Sadeera Samarawickrama added an impressive 108 as Sri Lanka posted a formidable total of 344/9. Mendis smashed 14 fours and six sixes during his 77-ball innings and was involved in two significant century partnerships, first with Pathum Nissanka (51) for the second wicket and then with Samarawickrama for the third wicket.
