In a dramatic turn of events following the Copa America semifinals, the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) has initiated an investigation into an altercation that erupted between Uruguay players and Colombian fans after the match on Wednesday.
The incident erupted after Colombia defeated Uruguay 1-0, igniting tempers in the stands where several family members of Uruguayan players sat.
Following the final whistle, tensions escalated when Uruguayan striker Darwin Núñez and other players approached the crowd, leading to a confrontation that quickly turned physical.
Reports indicate that both groups exchanged punches and threw various objects, including drinks and food, at each other.
In a statement to the media, CONMEBOL announced, “The Disciplinary Committee has opened an investigation to clarify the sequence of events and identify those responsible for the violence that occurred post-match between the national teams of Uruguay and Colombia.”
The governing body emphasized the importance of maintaining the integrity of the tournament, especially with the Copa America final approaching.
The statement continued, “On the eve of the final, we want to reaffirm that we will not tolerate any actions undermining the spirit of this global football celebration.”
The statement further added, “It is unacceptable for passion to devolve into violence, and any behavior that jeopardizes the integrity of the sport will face repercussions.”
Colombia, having qualified for the final, will seek its second Copa America title against Argentina on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Uruguay, after their semifinal loss, is set to face Canada at Bank of America Stadium on Saturday for the third-place playoff.
