Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli return to team India for a three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka.
The newly appointed Indian coach, Gautam Gambhir, requested senior players to be part of India’s ODI squad in the series against Sri Lanka. In preparation for the upcoming Champions Trophy in Pakistan, Gambhir however wants to test the right combination for Team India.
The Sri Lanka series will however mark the maiden series of Gautam Gambhir as the head coach of the Indian senior team. He will take charge from outgoing coach Rahul Dravid, who coached India to T20 World Cup victory.
However, it remains unclear whether Team India will travel to Pakistan in February 2025 for the Champions Trophy. Some media reports suggest India is asking for neutral venues like the UAE or Sri Lanka for its Champions Trophy matches.
Team India is set to play three One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and three T20 matches against Sri Lanka. Rohit Sharma will continue to lead the senior men’s team for ODIs.
Meanwhile, the announcement of the retirement of seniors Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja from T20s following the World Cup victory in Barbados has made India search for a new captain.
The Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee, in consultation with the BCCI, has decided that Suryakumar Yadav will lead the Indian T20I team for the three-match series.
Suryakumar however was in line to captain the side in the T20Is as the selectors were unsure if they should appoint Hardik Pandya as skipper given his past fitness record. Pandya was India’s vice-captain during their triumphant T20 World Cup campaign.
