Virat Kohli
As the T20I series between India and Afghanistan kicks off in Mohali on Thursday, the performances of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will be under intense scrutiny. The veteran cricketers, accustomed to high levels of scrutiny, face a unique situation this time. Their displays in the shortest format will be closely analyzed as the Indian cricket team prepares for the 2024 T20 World Cup. Both players have not featured in a T20I match for India in over a year, leading to speculation about their roles after the 2022 T20 World Cup.
Contrary to earlier assumptions about their potential phase-out from T20Is, the recent selection of both players in the Indian squad for the last T20I series before the 2024 T20 World Cup suggests they remain integral to the team’s plans. According to reports, BCCI selectors, particularly chief selector Ajit Agarkar, held discussions with Virat Kohli regarding his role in the shortest format. The nature of the discussions and whether similar talks occurred with Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill remain unclear.
Virat Kohli, with an impressive tally of 4008 runs in 115 matches at an average of 52.73 and a strike rate of 137.96, recently became the first batter to score 2000 runs in seven different calendar years. Despite India’s recent defeat to South Africa in the 1st Test, Kohli showcased his batting prowess by scoring 76 runs, contributing significantly to his 2023 total of 2006 runs.
