Varun Kumar, an Indian Hockey player has been accused of sexual assault by a woman in Bengaluru, a police officer said.
The 22-year-old woman claimed that the player allegedly raped her several times in the last five years, on the promise of marrying her.
She was 17 when she met Varun Kumar on Instagram in 2019, the woman informed.
A Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POSCO) case has been registered against him as the woman was underage when the incident happened.
The woman claimed that Varun Kumar would indulge in her sexual acts during his visits to Bengaluru’s SAI stadium for Hockey matches.
Based on a complaint filed by the woman, a First Information Report (FIR) has been filed against the player.
As per reports, a case has been registered against him at the Jnanabharti police station in Bengaluru. The investigation is underway, and a team of Karnataka police officials is set to travel to Jalandhar and interrogate the player.
Varun Kumar is an Indian hockey player who plays as a defender for Punjab Warriors in the Hockey India League and the Indian national team.
He belongs to Himachal Pradesh and has been living in Punjab’s Jalandhar.
He is on the run and a search is on to trace him,” officials said.
He was rewarded with a Prize money of rs. 1 Lakh by the Himachal Pradesh government after the Indian Hockey team scored a bronze medal in the Tokyo Olympics.
