The three-decade-long “maun vrat” (vow of silence) of an 85-year-old woman from Jharkhand, popular as ‘Mauni Mata’ will end on January 22 when the Ram temple in Ayodhya opens, fulfilling her goal. According to her family, Saraswati Devi began her vow the day the Babri Masjid was destroyed in 1992 and promised to break it only until the Ram temple was dedicated.
Known as ‘Mauni Mata’ in Ayodhya, Devi used sign language to converse with family members, but she also written down complex words. Despite taking a break from ‘Maun vrat’ and speaking for an hour at noon every day till 2020, she remained silent on the day Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the temple’s foundation.
“The day Babri Masjid was demolished on December 6, 1992, my mother took a vow to observe silence till the Ram Mandir was constructed in Ayodhya. She has been jubilant ever since the date of consecration of the temple was announced,” 55-year-old Hare Ram Agarwal, Devi’s youngest child, told PTI.

He added that Devi has been invited to take part in the Ram temple opening ceremony by Mahant Nritya Gopal Das’s disciples. After her husband Devkinandan Agarwal passed away in 1986, Devi, a mother of eight children—four of whom are daughters—devoted her life to Lord Ram and spent the majority of her time traveling on pilgrimages, according to family members and neighbors who attested to her goodness.
At Dhaiya in Dhanbad, Devi resides with her second-eldest son, Nand Lal Agarwal, who works as an official with Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL), a division of Coal India. Devi drinks a glass of milk in the morning and evening and eats only once a day. She eats roti, rice, and lentils as part of her vegetarian diet.
