Wednesday proved to be a tumultuous day for Indian wrestlers at the Paris Olympic Games, marred by a series of setbacks and controversies.
The day began with a significant blow for Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat, who was disqualified from the women’s 50 kg category just prior to the final. The disqualification was due to Phogat being overweight, casting a shadow over her anticipated performance.
The situation further deteriorated as the day progressed. In a separate incident, Antim Panghal, competing in the women’s 53 kg weight class, faced additional turmoil when her sister was apprehended for a serious security breach. According to reports, French authorities discovered that Panghal’s sister was attempting to enter the Athletes Village using the wrestler’s accreditation card.

The breach prompted an immediate response from security personnel, who detained Panghal’s sister. Consequently, Antim Panghal was summoned to provide a statement regarding the incident. Despite her initial claims that the situation would be resolved swiftly and her accreditation would be reinstated, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has opted to take decisive action.
In response to the breach, the IOA has decided to recall Antim Panghal and her support staff from Paris before the conclusion of the Games. The decision reflects the seriousness with which the organization views the security lapse.
Panghal, who was defeated in her pre-quarterfinal bout 0-10 by Turkey’s Zeynep Yetgh earlier in the day, expressed distress over the unfolding events. She initially assured that her sister’s release was imminent and that her accreditation issues would be resolved shortly.
However, the IOA’s swift action underscores the gravity of the situation and its commitment to maintaining strict adherence to Olympic protocols. As the Games continue, the focus will now shift to addressing the ramifications of these incidents and their impact on the Indian wrestling team’s performance.
