SC Committee Flags High Accident Risk In Jabalpur Review

The Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety, chaired by Abhay Manohar Sapre, reviewed traffic management measures in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, stressing the need for stricter enforcement and sustained awareness to reduce road accidents and fatalities.

Traffic authorities informed senior district officials that 3,372 road accidents occurred in 2025, causing 666 deaths and over 2,400 serious injuries.

Early 2026 figures indicate improvement, with declines in accidents, fatalities, and injuries during the January–March period.

Officials highlighted progress in addressing accident-prone ‘black spots’, with their number reduced and some locations reporting no incidents after corrective steps.

Despite this, several accidents were still reported at identified high-risk areas this year.

The review noted that young individuals, particularly those aged 25–35 and two-wheeler riders, remain the most vulnerable.

Rural regions continue to report higher accident rates than urban areas, underlining the need for targeted interventions.

Authorities emphasised the importance of helmet and seat belt usage in reducing fatalities.

Justice Sapre directed officials to improve road signage, remove encroachments, strengthen highway patrolling, and accelerate black spot rectification. He called for safety audits, speed monitoring, and strict action against repeat offenders. Officials have already acted against hundreds of motorists.

Proposals include mandatory helmets and stricter checks. Authorities continue regular monitoring, increased enforcement, and awareness efforts as part of the Supreme Court’s road safety mandate.
