Raja Raghuvanshi Murder: Supreme Court Issues Notice To Accused Wife Over Honeymoon Killing

In the high-profile murder case of Raja Raghuvanshi of Indore, the Supreme Court has issued notice to the accused Sonam Raghuvanshi, asking for her reply.

Although the Supreme Court refused to stay the Meghalaya High Court’s bail order, the Meghalaya government has filed an appeal challenging the decision.

A bench of Justices MM Sundresh and Justice Sheel Nagu gave this direction and scheduled the next hearing for July 10.

Calling the High Court’s bail order unjust, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta argued that the accused had planned the murder in advance.

He told the court that they lured Raja to the hills, killed him, dumped his body in a gorge and fled to Uttar Pradesh, where police arrested them.

He added that the trial is underway, with 94 witnesses yet to be examined, and opposed bail.

In response, the Supreme Court stated it would stay the order and monitor the trial’s progress.

The Meghalaya government argues that Sonam Raghuvanshi mistakenly received bail on April 27 because a single arrest document listed Section 403(1) BNS instead of the murder charge under Section 103(1) BNS.

Her lawyer successfully exploited this technical glitch on their fourth attempt, despite six other documents featuring the correct section.

The High Court dismissed the state’s challenge, ruling that police violated Article 22(1) of the Indian Constitution and Section 47(1) of the BNSS by failing to properly communicate the grounds of arrest.

This follows the May 2025 disappearance of Sonam’s husband, Raja Raghuvanshi, during their Shillong honeymoon; search teams found his body in a deep gorge near Sohra’s Wei Sawdong Falls on June 2, 2025.
