PIL Filed In Delhi High Court Against Film ‘The Taj Story’ Over Alleged Historical Distortion

A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been submitted to the Delhi High Court against the soon-to-be-released film The Taj Story, claiming that it misrepresents historical events and could disrupt communal harmony.

The petition, moved by advocate Shakeel Abbas, calls upon the Central government and the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to reassess the film’s certification.

Abbas argues that the movie presents incorrect and manipulated details about the Taj Mahal, one of India’s most celebrated landmarks, while promoting a biased political viewpoint.

The plea lists the film’s producers, director, writer, and actor Paresh Rawal as respondents, along with the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the CBFC.

According to the petition, the film ‘intentionally alters historical narratives for political reasons’ and poses a potential risk to social peace. It also claims that the makers have previously produced politically charged and divisive films, referring to The Kashmir Files and The Bengal Files as examples.

The plea states that the trailer of The Taj Story premiered on 16 October 2025, and the full film will likely release nationwide on 31 October. It alleges that the CBFC failed to exercise proper caution in allowing the trailer’s release, despite what the petitioner calls clear signs of misinformation and provocative content.

The petitioner urges the court to review the film’s certification afresh, include a clear disclaimer, and either remove certain scenes or classify it as an ‘Adults Only’ film to prevent misuse of historical themes.

It further stresses that approving films without thorough fact-checking can damage India’s secular character and mislead the public about the nation’s past.

The Delhi High Court is likely to hear the matter in the coming days.
