Jaipur Blasts: Special Court Sentences Four Terrorists To Life Imprisonment In 2008 Live Bomb Case

A special court in Rajasthan on Tuesday sentenced four terrorists to life imprisonment in the Jaipur serial bomb blasts case related to a live bomb found in 2008.

The court delivered a 600-page verdict convicting Saifurrahman, Mohammad Saif, Mohammad Sarwar Azmi, and Shahbaz Ahmed.

They were found guilty in the case of a live bomb defused minutes before detonation near Chandpole Bazaar.

On May 13, 2008, eight serial blasts rocked Jaipur.

A ninth bomb was later found near a guest house and defused just 15 minutes before it could explode.

The court observed, “The greatest court is our mind. Punishment has been given, which means the crime has been committed.”

Special Public Prosecutor Sagar Tiwari pushed for strict punishment. “The act of the culprits is the most serious crime. They cannot be treated with leniency,” he said.

Defense lawyer Minhajul Haq argued for leniency, citing that the accused had already served 15 years and were acquitted in eight other cases by the High Court.

On Friday, the court had convicted the four under four sections of the Indian Penal Code, two under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, and three under the Explosive Substances Act – all carrying a maximum punishment of life imprisonment.

Except for Shahbaz, the others had earlier received death sentences in the serial blasts.

The Rajasthan High Court later acquitted them. The state’s appeal is now pending in the Supreme Court.

The ATS arrested them in the live bomb case in 2019 and filed a supplementary chargesheet with new witness testimonies.

The ATS examined 112 witnesses, including journalist Prashant Tandon, former ADG Arvind Kumar, and bicycle tightener Dinesh Mahawar.
