The Gujarat High Court has issued a notice and sought a reply in response to a petition filed by Asaram Bapu, who is serving life imprisonment in the 2013 Ahmedabad rape case. The court will hear the matter next on 27 June.
Asaram has requested an extension of his interim bail period, which ends on 30 June. The Gujarat High Court had earlier granted him three months of interim bail.
In 2023, the Gandhinagar Sessions Court convicted 86-year-old Asaram Bapu and sentenced him to life imprisonment for the 2013 rape case. He was arrested on 31 August 2013 and has remained in jail since then.
The Supreme Court had granted interim bail to Asaram on medical grounds until 31 March. After that, the Gujarat High Court extended the bail until 30 June.
Asaram’s lawyer has now sought an additional six months, citing a need for Panchkarma therapy. Doctors have advised that the treatment lasts for 90 days.
The Supreme Court had earlier stated it would consider bail only on medical grounds. On 29 August, the Gujarat High Court rejected Asaram’s plea to suspend the sentence passed by the lower court.
The current petition is limited to a medical-based extension of interim bail. The court’s decision is awaited after the upcoming hearing.
