Delhi High Court Grants Bail To Wrestler Sushil Kumar In Sagar Dhankar Case

The Delhi High Court on Tuesday granted regular bail to wrestler Sushil Kumar. The bail is in connection with the murder case of junior wrestler Sagar Dhankar.

Kumar had been in custody since his arrest in the case.

The incident took place on the night of 4 May 2021, when Dhankar was assaulted and later succumbed to his injuries.

Justice Sanjeev Narula granted bail to Sushil Kumar on a bail bond of Rs 50,000 along with two sureties of the same amount. A detailed court order is awaited.

Previously, Kumar was granted interim bail for seven days in July 2023 to undergo knee surgery.

He is currently facing trial alongside other accused in the case.

Advocates RS Malik and Sumeet Shokeen, representing Kumar, argued that he has already spent more than three and a half years in custody.

They pointed out that out of 186 prosecution witnesses, only 30 have been examined in the past three years.

According to the case details, Sagar Dhankar and others were allegedly assaulted at Chhatrasal Stadium on the night of the incident.

Dhankar sustained serious injuries and later died.

Sushil Kumar is regarded as one of India’s most accomplished athletes. He won a bronze medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Kumar also secured a silver medal at the 2012 London Olympics.
