The Delhi High Court granted interim bail to Kuldeep Singh Sengar, the expelled BJP MLA and convict in the Unnao rape case, for two weeks on medical grounds. The court directed AIIMS New Delhi to admit Sengar and evaluate his health. Sengar claimed to suffer from diabetes, cataracts, retina problems, and other illnesses.
Court Orders Medical Assessment
The court instructed the AIIMS Medical Superintendent to suggest whether treatment is possible at the facility. It also directed the jail administration to submit a detailed health report. Sengar’s lawyer argued that his sentence suspension request is based only on health issues.
CBI to Respond on Sentence Suspension
The court issued a notice to the CBI, seeking its reply to Sengar’s plea for sentence suspension in the custodial death case of the Unnao victim’s father. The court will hear the matter on January 13.
Earlier, in June, the court rejected Sengar’s plea to suspend his sentence. His lawyer noted that Sengar has already spent eight years in jail, nearing the 10-year maximum punishment in this case.
Sengar was convicted of raping a minor in 2017 and sentenced to life imprisonment. In 2020, he received an additional 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for the custodial death of the victim’s father. The court imposed a ₹10 lakh fine and emphasized that no leniency can be shown in such cases.
