Delhi Court Sends IPS Officer Deepak Gehlawat To CBI Custody In Bribery Case

A Delhi court has remanded Haryana-cadre IPS officer Deepak Gehlawat to one day of CBI custody. The case relates to an alleged ₹3 crore bribery case linked to a fake medicines racket.

The Rouse Avenue Court granted one day of custody, although the CBI had sought five days of remand.

Gehlawat, who is currently on central deputation with the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) in Delhi, has been accused of accepting bribes.

According to the CBI, investigators searched multiple locations linked to him. The searches led to the seizure of several digital devices, hard disks, and documents.

The CBI alleged that Gehlawat demanded a ₹3 crore bribe from a businessman in Puducherry. The agency alleged that he offered to use his influence to pressure CBI officials. In return, he allegedly promised to secure a favourable outcome in an ongoing CBI investigation.

The agency said the case is connected to the investigation into a major fake medicines racket.

Case Background

The case stems from a CBI operation conducted in June. During the operation, the agency arrested Delhi Police Crime Branch Inspector Pradeep Singh and alleged middleman Rajkumar.

The agency had registered an FIR against Pradeep Singh, Rajkumar, and businessman N Raja.

The matter relates to an alleged ₹5,000 crore fake medicines racket and efforts to provide relief to the main accused.

Earlier, the CBI had caught Inspector Pradeep Kumar Singh and other intermediaries allegedly accepting nearly ₹1 crore as an advance bribe.

Investigators alleged that businessman N Raja sought relief in the CBI probe against him, following which a deal worth ₹3 crore was struck. Of this amount, ₹1 crore was allegedly brought to Delhi through hawala channels for delivery to the inspector.

The CBI said the investigation is ongoing and the role of other individuals linked to the network is also being examined.
