Clarification On Misinformation Regarding Justice Yashwant Varma’s Incident And In-House Enquiry

Misinformation and rumors have been spreading concerning an incident at the residence of Justice Yashwant Varma, leading to confusion regarding the events.

Authorities have now clarified the details surrounding the incident and provided an update on the ongoing process.

In-House Enquiry Procedure Underway

The Supreme Court of India has outlined a clear procedure for in-house enquiries, as established in the case of C Ravichandran Iyer v Justice AM Bhattacharjee (1995).

The Supreme Court has made this process publicly available on its website.

The Additional District and Sessions Judge ‘X’ v Registrar General, High Court of Madhya Pradesh (2015), further clarifies the procedure and explains how to implement it.

Upon receiving the information about the incident, the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court immediately initiated the in-house enquiry procedure, starting the collection of evidence and information.

The Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court began the inquiry before the Collegium meeting on March 20, 2025. He is expected to submit the inquiry report to the Chief Justice of India on March 21, 2025.

The report will undergo review, and authorities will take the necessary action accordingly.

Separate Proposal For Justice Yashwant Varma’s Transfer

In a separate development, authorities have discussed the proposal to transfer Justice Yashwant Varma, the second most senior judge of the Delhi High Court.

This proposal, which suggests transferring him to his parent High Court at Allahabad, is an independent matter and separate from the ongoing in-house enquiry.

The Collegium, which includes the Chief Justice of India and four of the senior-most Supreme Court Judges, reviewed the transfer proposal on March 20, 2025.

Following this review, the Collegium sent letters to the consultee Judges of the Supreme Court, the Chief Justices of the relevant High Courts, and Justice Yashwant Varma.

The Collegium will carefully consider the responses received and then pass a resolution based on these findings.

Conclusion And Next Steps

The inquiry into the incident at Justice Varma’s residence is ongoing, with the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court expected to submit his report soon.

At the same time, authorities are handling the process regarding the proposed transfer of Justice Varma separately and will process it once they review all responses.

The legal and judicial processes continue to move forward with transparency and due diligence.

Atul Garg, the Director of the Delhi Fire Department, has dismissed reports claiming that cash was found at the residence of Delhi High Court Judge Justice Yashwant Verma. “Our team’s role was solely to control the fire, and there was nothing unusual reported at the scene.
