CJI Surya Kant-Led Collegium Recommends Chief Justices For 4 High Courts

The Supreme Court Collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, has recommended the appointment of four judges as Chief Justices of the Patna, Calcutta, Bombay and Punjab and Haryana High Courts.

The Collegium made the recommendations at its meeting on August 6, 2026, according to a statement released on the Supreme Court website.

Justice V Kameswar Rao of the Delhi High Court has been recommended as Chief Justice of the Patna High Court, while Justice Ravindra V Ghuge of the Bombay High Court has been recommended for appointment as Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court.

The Collegium has also recommended Justice Mahesh Chandra Tripathi of the Allahabad High Court for elevation as Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court.

Justice Ashwani Kumar Mishra, presently serving in the Punjab and Haryana High Court with the Allahabad High Court as his parent court, will become Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

In a separate recommendation, the Collegium proposed the transfer of two High Court judges.

Justice Manash Ranjan Pathak, whose parent High Court is Gauhati, will transfer from the Orissa High Court to the Gujarat High Court.

The Collegium has also recommended the transfer of Justice Krushna Ram Mohapatra from the Orissa High Court to the Chhattisgarh High Court.

The Centre will now process the recommendations for appointments and transfers under the existing memorandum of procedure governing the appointment and transfer of High Court judges.
