Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday declared a stringent ‘zero tolerance’ approach against narcotics in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. He confirmed that authorities will confiscate the properties of individuals involved in drug-related offences.
The announcement followed recent enforcement operations in Motibag, Nagpur, where officials seized marijuana stocks and firearms.
Legislators, including Pravin Datke, Vikas Thakre, Vikram Pachpute, and Nitin Raut, participated in the discussion.
Fadnavis stated that authorities have registered cases under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act, 1999.
Officials are preparing charge sheets and will initiate legal proceedings to seize the assets of the accused.
CM Fadnavis added that civic bodies will act against illegal constructions in accordance with the Supreme Court of India directives.
The Chief Minister announced targeted campaigns in sensitive zones to curb drug trafficking. He warned that police officers will face accountability if such incidents recur in their jurisdictions.
CM Fadnavis highlighted the success of Operation Thunder, under which Nagpur Police registered 907 cases in the past 11 months.
Authorities seized nearly 1,254 kilograms of narcotics valued at approximately ₹10 crore.
To strengthen enforcement, the government established the Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) on August 31, 2023.
Officials have expanded this framework across all police stations and enhanced coordination with the Central Government and other states to dismantle interstate and international supply chains.
CM Fadnavis further warned that any police personnel found complicit in drug activities will face immediate dismissal. He also proposed reducing the prosecution age in such cases from 18 to 16 years, citing concerns over minors being exploited in trafficking networks.
