Prime Minister Narendra Modi met members of India’s contingent at the WorldSkills Competition Shanghai 2026 at his residence at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg, New Delhi, on Friday. He congratulated the participants for showcasing their abilities on the international stage and encouraged them to pursue excellence in their respective fields.
PM Modi shared details of the interaction on social media, praised the young achievers and expressed his pleasure at meeting and motivating them.
The Prime Minister highlighted the purpose behind establishing a separate Ministry for Skill Development. He further emphasised that skill training institutions hold importance comparable to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs).
PM Modi urged participants to share their experiences and suggestions to help the government strengthen the country’s skill training system.
India delivered its strongest performance at the 48th WorldSkills Competition, held at the National Exhibition and Convention Centre in Shanghai from September 22 to 27.
The country won six silver medals and 20 Medallions for Excellence, securing 10th place in the overall rankings.
India improved on its 2024 performance in Lyon, France, where the contingent finished 13th with four bronze medals and 12 Medallions for Excellence.
According to the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, more than 1,400 competitors from nearly 70 countries and regions participated in the six-day event.
India sent its largest-ever contingent of 70 competitors, who competed across 63 skill categories, including emerging technologies, advanced manufacturing, engineering, creative industries and specialised services.
The National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) coordinated India’s participation, with support from Sector Skill Councils, industry partners, training institutions and technical experts.
The results underline the growing capabilities of India’s skilled workforce and its expanding presence in international skills competitions.
