Who Was The Iron Lady Of Orissa? A Birth Anniversary Tribute To Nandini Satpathy

Today marks the birth anniversary of Nandini Satpathy, the first woman Chief Minister of Odisha, a fearless freedom fighter, prominent Congress leader, author, and one of the most influential political figures in eastern India.

On this occasion, Pallavi Rebbapragada’s biography Nandini Satpathy: The Iron Lady of Orissa (Simon & Schuster) becomes a compelling read that brings alive the story of this remarkable woman who earned the title ‘Iron Lady’ for her decisive leadership and bold administrative reforms.

Born on 9 June 1931 in a literary and revolutionary family — her father, Kalindi Charan Panigrahi, was a noted Odia writer and freedom fighter — Nandini displayed extraordinary courage from a young age.

Nandini Satpathy took part in the freedom movement as a college student in the 1940s. She famously climbed the rooftop of Ravenshaw College and pulled down the Union Jack. The act led to her arrest.

This fiery spirit defined her political journey.

Nandini Satpathy became a Rajya Sabha member at just 31 and later served as Information and Broadcasting Minister in Indira Gandhi’s cabinet. Her contribution during the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War, particularly through Free Bangla Radio, highlighted her strategic role in information warfare.

The book shines brightest when it covers Nandini Satpathy’s tenure as Chief Minister of Odisha (1972–1976).

Nandini Satpathy became the state’s first woman Chief Minister. During her tenure, she implemented radical land reforms and strengthened the administration. She also earned widespread popularity despite facing political turbulence.

Author Pallavi Rebbapragada, a journalist and public policy consultant, presents a nuanced portrait — portraying Satpathy not just as the ‘Iron Lady’ known for her firmness, but also as a complex personality: a close confidante of Indira Gandhi who later experienced political differences, a prolific writer, and a woman who navigated the male-dominated world of Indian politics with grace and grit.

Rebbapragada’s well-researched narrative traces the highs and lows of Satpathy’s life. It covers her rise in national politics and her bold policy decisions.

The book also examines the challenges she faced during the Emergency and the relative neglect of her later years.

The biography also explores her literary contributions and personal relationships, painting her as a colourful, controversial, and consequential figure.

Jairam Ramesh, Senior Congress leader, aptly remarked, “Nandini Satpathy was a colourful, controversial and consequential political personality. All said her life needed a serious biographer, and she has now found one.”

The book was released on her birth anniversary. It serves as a powerful reminder of the significant contributions made by women leaders in India’s political history. Many of these contributions often remain under-recognised.

Nandini Satpathy’s life inspires generations with her unwavering commitment to public service, progressive values, and administrative courage.

The Iron Lady of Orissa is essential reading for anyone interested in Indian politics, women’s empowerment, and the making of modern Odisha. It urges us to remember and honour the legacies of trailblazing women who shaped our democracy.
