Mumbai’s historic Chinchpokli Sarvajanik Utsav Mandal organised the grand Aagman Sohla of Chinchpokli Cha Chintamani on Saturday, marking the beginning of the iconic Ganpati festival’s 107th year.
Thousands of devotees gathered across the Lalbaug, Parel and Girangaon areas as traditional dhol-tasha performances and chants filled the streets.
The celebrations continued the Mandal’s long-standing tradition of creating distinctive themes for its annual Ganeshotsav.
This year, the Mandal has created an elaborate experience based on the grandeur of South Indian temple architecture.
The Chintamani idol draws inspiration from Lord Venkateshwara Balaji of Tirumala Tirupati and features sacred elements including Garuda, Keertimukh, Shankha, Chakra and a camphor Tilak.
The organisers have designed the pandal to resemble the architectural grandeur of the Sri Venkateswara Temple at Swarnagiri in Hyderabad and Bhuvanagiri.
The structure features towering gopurams, deepastambhas and sculpted yali or vyala figures representing traditional temple guardians.
Mandal president Rajendra Dicholkar said artists, craftsmen and modern technology had helped bring the elaborate concept to life.
Founded in 1920 in Mumbai’s historic textile district, the Mandal has become an important part of the city’s cultural heritage.
Chintamani Ganpati continues to represent community unity and devotion, particularly among the residents of the historic Girangaon region.
The annual Aagman Sohla attracts lakhs of devotees from different parts of the country, making it a significant event in Mumbai’s Ganeshotsav calendar.
The Mandal has joined hands with the Adani Group for this year’s celebrations.
With Ganeshotsav approaching, preparations at the venue have intensified, while hundreds of volunteers continue working to complete arrangements for devotees.
The new temple-inspired theme is expected to become one of the major attractions of this year’s Chinchpokli Cha Chintamani celebrations.
