In the wake of the suspension of Sandip Ghosh, the former Principal of RG Kar Medical College, the West Bengal health department has intensified its scrutiny of his associates, amid growing unrest within the state’s medical community.
On Wednesday, Dr. Birupaksha Biswas, formerly the Senior Resident Doctor at Burdwan Medical College & Hospital, transferred to Kakdwip Sub-Division Hospital in South 24 Parganas district.
Biswas, who was a key figure in the Pathology department at Burdwan, is now facing what many perceive as a punitive reassignment.
The move follows the surfacing of a disturbing audio clip, reportedly featuring Biswas threatening a medical intern with suspension if they did not comply with his directives.
While the authenticity of the recording remains unverified, it has fueled complaints from junior doctors alleging a culture of intimidation fostered by Ghosh’s close allies, including Biswas.
The timing of Biswas’s transfer, coming shortly after Ghosh’s suspension and subsequent arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on charges related to financial misconduct and the rape and murder of a junior doctor, suggests a broader crackdown by the state health authorities.
The department aims to address concerns about corruption and misconduct within Ghosh’s former associates by taking this action.
Ghosh’s suspension, announced a day after his arrest, links to ongoing investigations into financial irregularities and high-profile criminal cases at RG Kar Medical College.
The CBI’s court-directed and monitored probe has brought significant attention to alleged wrongdoings within the institution.
As the state health department continues to act decisively, the medical community remains on edge, watching closely to see if further actions will be taken against other individuals involved in the scandal.
