We Need To Support Negotiators To Bring Us A Good Result: Shashi Tharoor On Trump Tariffs

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Saturday said that it is time to support our negotiators to get India a good outcome while protecting national interests and displaying some degree of flexibility.

India and the US are negotiating a trade deal amid President Trump’s moves to put pressure on New Delhi by imposing a 25% tariff with a penalty.

Speaking on the sidelines of the launch of his book ‘Our Living Constitution’, Tharoor said that “India needs to protect its export market in the US. We should also be engaging with other nations and regions, which are export destinations for India.”

He noted that with ongoing trade talks with the EU and Japan, and the recently concluded Free Trade Agreement with the UK can cushion India to some degree against the losses in the US.

$90 Billion Export Market at Stake

Stressing the importance of the US as an export market for India, he said, “Our exports into the US are valued at around $90 billion; therefore, we can’t afford to lose that.”

“We can’t lose everything. We have preserved some things. This is the task for which we have to support our negotiators to bring us a good result,” he added.

On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed the resilience of the Indian economy amid turbulence triggered by US tariff hikes, saying that the country must remain vigilant about its economic interests and adopt ‘swadeshi’ products.

According to PM Modi, the government is doing everything it can in the best interest of the country.

On Friday, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said that India and the US share a comprehensive global strategic partnership anchored in shared interests, democratic values, and robust people-to-people ties, with the partnership having weathered several transitions and challenges.
