Yashpal Arya, Uttarakhand leader of the opposition party, on Tuesday, said Congress is not against the Uniform Civil Code bill that has been tabled today in the state assembly.
“We are not against it (Uniform Civil Code). The House is governed by the rules of conduct of business but BJP is continuously ignoring it and wants to suppress the voice of the MLAs based on the strength of numbers,” Arya told news agency ANI.
The Congress leader further added, “It is the right of the MLAs to express their views in the House, during Question Hour, whether they have a proposal under Rule 58 or other rules, they have the right to raise their voices on various issues of the state in the Assembly.”

Harish Rawat, a Congress leader, attacked the Pushkar Singh Dhami government, claiming that it is “very eager” to pass legislation and that regulations are not being followed.
The former CM claimed, “No one has the draft copy and they want an immediate discussion on it… The Central Government is using a sensitive state like Uttarakhand for tokenism, if they want to bring UCC, it should have been brought by the central government.”
The UCC entails a unified set of laws applicable to all Indian citizens, devoid of religious considerations, especially in matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption.
The draft bill being presented in the assembly seeks to impose a complete ban on polygamy and includes provisions for the registration of relationships for live-in couples. Adoption rights are proposed to be granted universally, and the bill aims to establish equal inheritance rights for both sons and daughters.
