Waqf Bill: Opposition MPs Meet LS Speaker, Lodge Protest Against JPC Chairman Jagdambika Pal

Opposition MPs on the committee for the Waqf (Amendment) Bill met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Tuesday. They protested against what they called “unilateral” actions by JPC Chairman and BJP MP Jagdambika Pal. Lawmakers from Congress, DMK, TMC, AAP, and SP claimed that Pal acted arbitrarily and invited non-stakeholders to meetings.

Allegations of Exclusion in JPC Proceedings

Opposition members alleged that Pal calls JPC meetings without consulting them and restricts their opportunity to speak. They said he ignores their views and does not prioritize true stakeholders’ opinions. After the meeting, AAP MP Sanjay Singh told the media that they had explained their issues to the Speaker. He said Om Birla assured them of discussing the matter to find a solution.

JPC Chairman and BJP Members Deny Charges

Jagdambika Pal denied the allegations, stating that Opposition members actively participate in meetings and have ample chance to speak. BJP members dismissed the accusations, claiming the Opposition wants to delay the Waqf Amendment Bill’s progress.

The JPC, facing regular protests from Opposition members, is expected to submit its report by the first week of Parliament’s Winter Session.
