Varanasi Flood: PM Modi Speaks With Mayor, DM As Ganga Crosses Warning Level

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reviewed the flood situation in Varanasi with Mayor Ashok Tiwari and District Magistrate Satyendra Kumar as the rising Ganga water level affected several parts of the city.

During the discussion, officials briefed the Prime Minister on rescue and relief operations.

PM Modi directed the administration to ensure that flood-affected people receive necessary assistance and that adequate facilities remain available at relief camps. He further asked officials to keep additional relief material ready if the situation requires further support.

The Prime Minister, who represents Varanasi in the Lok Sabha, stressed continuous monitoring of the flood situation and relief work.

The Ganga crossed its warning mark in Varanasi on Wednesday. Central Water Commission data showed the river at 70.29 metres, slightly above the warning level of 70.26 metres.

The danger mark is 71.26 metres, while the highest flood level recorded in the city is 73.90 metres.

The rise has increased concerns in low-lying areas and around the ghats.

As a precaution, the district administration suspended all boat operations on the Ganga and intensified monitoring of vulnerable areas.

Authorities have advised residents, devotees and visitors to stay away from the ghats and avoid entering locations where strong currents are present.
