Uttarakhand Comes Step Closer To Becoming First State To Implement UCC

Uniform Civil Code (UCC) has always become a hot topic in the world of politics whenever mentioned. The BJP government has always been trying really hard to implement it throughout the nation but the move has always been interrupted by one or the other hurdle. The state of Uttarakhand is a step closer to becoming the very first state of India to implement UCC  in the region. The state cabinet has given a thumbs-up to the UCC panel’s draft report. The decision was taken in a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami.

UCC in Uttarakhand

The events of Sunday happened two days after the chief minister received the report from the five-member UCC committee, which was led by retired Supreme Court judge Ranjana Desai. The event also occurs the night before a special two-day assembly session to examine the implementation of the code is scheduled to take place, as announced by the BJP government in the state on January 26. Tuesday, the second and last day of the assembly, is when the report will be presented. The UCC law is expected to pass easily because the ruling party has 47 seats in the 70-member parliament.

The Governor, who is the head of state by constitutional authority, will then receive the law. It will become a law if the governor gives his approval. The BJP’s agenda for the Uttarakhand assembly election of 2022 included the adoption of UCC. In the end, the saffron party prevailed in a reelection.

What is UCC?

In short, it is a shared body of laws that will take precedence over the customs of other faiths and tribes, addressing matters like inheritance, maintenance, marriage, and divorce. The majority of Muslims in the hill province reside in the Terai region, making up 14% (13.9%) of the total population according to the 2011 national census.
