Uttar Pradesh Cabinet Clears Path To Change Civic Poll Rules

The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet approved a proposal for an ordinance on Wednesday to amend the rules of urban local bodies (Nagar Nigam and Nagar Palika) in response to the recommendations of the Uttar Pradesh Backward Classes Commission formed for urban body elections.

The notification is expected to be issued soon after the Supreme Court granted the State Election Commission permission to issue a notification on Other Backward Classes (OBC) quotas after reviewing the report of the Uttar Pradesh Backward Classes Commission.

After a Cabinet meeting, Minister Arvind Sharma said, “Uttar Pradesh Cabinet approved an ordinance to amend the rules of Uttar Pradesh Nagar Nigam and Nagar Palika which comes under the Urban Development department”.

The Allahabad High Court had previously ordered the State to announce the urban local body elections without any reservations for the OBC; in response, the U.P. government had petitioned the Supreme Court and also established a five-member commission to determine the backwardness criteria for reservations.
