UPSC Centenary: PM Modi Attends 100th Anniversary Celebrations At Bharat Mandapam

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday participated in the centenary celebrations of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, highlighting its century-long legacy and contribution to the country.

The programme marked the conclusion of year-long celebrations that began on October 1 last year to commemorate 100 years since the establishment of the first Public Service Commission in India in 1926.

On the occasion, PM Modi released a UPSC Centenary Commemorative Coin, a commemorative postage stamp and a book titled 100 Landmark Judgements – Shaping the Policies of UPSC and Public Service Commissions in India.

Addressing the gathering, PM Modi described the centenary as a celebration of the aspirations of millions of young Indians and the trust people place in the institution. He congratulated everyone associated with the UPSC for strengthening its role over the years.

The Prime Minister praised Captain Smit Machchhar, the Indian pilot who helped avert a major in-flight crisis despite suffering injuries.

PM Modi said Machchhar demonstrated courage and presence of mind and informed the gathering that he had spoken to the pilot’s parents and wife. He urged people to pray for Machchhar’s recovery and long life.

Recalling the history of civil services, PM Modi referred to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, who cleared the civil service examination in 1920. He further highlighted Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s contribution to institution-building and described the civil services as an important pillar of independent India.

The first Public Service Commission was established on October 1, 1926, and later evolved into an independent constitutional body.

The centenary event brought together senior officials, academicians, UPSC members and other dignitaries. It was part of the UPSC’s two-day programme marking its 100-year journey.
