In preparation for the anticipated influx of devotees for Mahakumbh 2025, the Uttar Pradesh government has launched efforts for river expansion along the banks of the Sangam. Moreover, to achieve the channelization of river and dredging at Sangam Nose, govt is planning to allocate around ₹20 crore.
The Irrigation and Water Resources Department is fully prepared. The department has has already received in-principle approval from the government. This initiative comes in response to significant erosion, which has reduced available land along the Sangam by 60% since 2019.
Between 2019 and 2024, the Ganga River has shifted approximately 200 to 500 meters from its right bank, significantly decreasing the land area. To address this issue, the Mela Administration, along with the Irrigation and Water Resources Department, is taking action for river expansion based on recommendations from experts at IIT Guwahati.

To increase the circulation area from Shastri Bridge to Sangam Nose, several measures have been proposed. The Irrigation Department plans to expand channelization work from approximately 150 meters to 175 meters using dredging machines.
The work of Mechanical Division will include handling of the dredging, embankment and enlargement of the circulation area will utilize the extracted material. This particular segment of project will need approximately ₹6.34 crore.
Additionally, launching apron (1×8 meters) will be constructed using geo bags within a nylon crate. The embankment layer will incorporate geo-grid materials rated at 200 and 100 MT per square meter. Notably, The management will spend around 10.24 crore rupees on this segment of the project.
The government has directed the Irrigation Department to draft a proposal and submit it to the Department of Urban Development. The Department of Urban Development will be responsible for ensuring further action on the project.
